I am Scum, the secondhand gamer.

Prologue

I am the scum of the Earth, I am Satanic, I am the devil worshiper, I am the person single handedly killing the game industry.

...apparently.

Confession

I'm a secondhand gamer and I'm proud to say this aloud. So, a recent article on N4G has triggered me into typing this. Although the article was semi-unrelated, I feel this has to be typed. I am being fed up of the game industry seeing me as scum and an inconvenience, this constant labeling in the game industry media is disheartening and annoying as an average gamer.
Everyone knows most the western world has been caught up in a recession, but of course, the game industry has to find someone to blame why they aren't making the sales they intended. This scapegoat my friend, always appears to be the secondhand gamer.

Value and patience

The fact is, if someone waits long enough, most the time, things become cheaper unless they are low in number, rare, significent or of great value. That's a fact and happens incredibly fast with videogames and seems to be increasing. According to the game industry, such as Eidos and David Jaffe, I'm a cockroach that needs to be stamped out. I'm a vampire for a publisher. Now, you look at a game that came out a few months ago, compare the original price to the value now as a secondhand game, I believe that as a 'patient' person, I have the right to get a game cheaper because I have waited longer to play the game. Why in my RIGHT MIND, would I buy a copy of a game which is brand new and is EXACTLY the same minus the fact that someone played it, got bored of it and was perfectly happy to get ripped off in trade value a mere month or two later?

Rights for The Secondhand Gamer

So what am I? Am I the tramp that walks around McDonalds and tries to eat the odd french fries and bits of Big Mac that slopped out whilst biting which have dropped on the ground? Why do I get compared to a pirate which is outright STEALING? Why hasn't this ever been a 'problem' for the game industry before?
Am I to blame for the people that actually TRADE IN THE GAMES in THE FIRST PLACE?

Fact is, I give a game a new home after being unwanted for the 'next model'. I get it cheaper because I'm patient and don't rush out to the shops to buy it day one (Don't get me wrong, I still do this for a lot of developers I'm a fan of, not all my games are secondhand, but a majority are). I go to Gamestation, Game, CEX or Amazon Marketplace, I see a vast library of previous unwanted titles, exchange MONEY for the GAME and take it home/wait for it to arrive and then play it. I have rightfully made this game my property in exchanging the money for the game. I have bought it.

Behind the rising secondhand game scenario

The problem comes down to the fact that so many games are made, that people feel that they have to trade a game for a new one or get credit towards a newly released one (see recent trade of Bioshock 2 half price for one of four games released in the last 2 months at Game) . They are impatient and need to play it day one, play it, find out they complete it faster than intended or it isn't their cup of tea because they've totally FAILED TO READ REVIEWS, sell it. Solution to this problem; RENT GAMES this way the publisher still gets the profit (I'm starting to do this now since R&C:ACiT due to financial reasons and WILL do it for Heavy Rain and GoWIII).
Another part of this problem is that the game industry are claiming and are rightly true that they get no income or profit from secondhand games when sold at game shops. Solution to this one, make the games more worthwhile to keep.

Curse of the virtual reward

An additional reason of why I believe that secondhand game trade-ins are rising is the 'virtual reward', as long as someone has a record of having completed a game and collecting the 'Achievements' and 'Trophies', well, that's the game exhausted, apparently. The game gets traded, the consumer has gotten all out of the game and moves to the next one. I know that people read books, watch DVDs and COLLECT THEM, they have them on shelves so people can walk in and go, "Ah, so you like...(insert whatever here)" and owning things can be a judge of character. I keep my games that I completed as my 'trophies' as would a big game hunter with animals heads mounted on the wall the completed closed boxes of the game and the fact I can play them again at my will, is my reward.

Besides, despite the traders doing me a favour by trading in the games so I can buy them cheaper, I consider them to be idiots to willingly get ripped off by the game shops insulting trade in value or instore credit with the wacky 'stock exchange' of game titles. I remember years ago, when the PS3 was in the dark ages (Pre-Autumn 2007) I tried to trade Resistance and Motorstorm, I was offered £7, sure these games were bundled everywhere, but the fact for both of them, the then two best exclusives on PS3 were being offered for £7 was a mere insult, especially the fact that around the corner was the same game being sold brand new for 4 times the price. I have often considered trading some of my full retail purchased games and back the hell away from the counter after getting a printout.

Digital downloads are the future!

Obviously the next stop is digital downloads. Except for a rather new company, trading secondhand digitally bought games is impossible. Now, digital downloads are a good idea, aren't they, it's a win, win situation, isn't it? WRONG.  Prices will probably never drop. Against my previous prediction and statement, I have a lot of PSN games and a few XBLA titles, I like this method of distribution for small games. Valve's Steam service is a brilliant idea and the timed offers are encouraging and I guess, are the equivalent to the secondhand game.
Now, if you look at XBLA and PSN titles game from years ago, you'll notice something, a lot haven't dropped in price, do you really want a future like that? Games ALWAYS being the original retail price no matter how long they've been out? (XBLA is notorious at doing this unless you are a Gold member, followed by Wiiware which never really drop in price and PSN is rather sensible with limited price drops and offers bundles such as Warhawk, much like Steam). But heck, I like the idea of playing a 'used' game and physically own it and treat it with a level of respect, complete it and leave it to play the experience another day.

In closing

Again, I am stubborn scum. I poison the game industry and lower developers wages, I cause the chain reaction and butterfly effect of a studio to close down if enough copies of a game aren't sold, in this climate I am likely to buy a game mere months after a studio closes, according to the people out there (I won't even start with Bobby Kotick from Activision) because I choose to sometimes go game shopping at Gamestation, Game, CEX, Ebay or Amazon Marketplace. I see myself as someone with exactly the same hobby as the people that rush out in the first month, I just wait and pay less. I have the RIGHT to buy a game cheaper. If the industry have a problem with that, go and annoy the stores to hand in money to each publisher with each sale, but then that'll cause the secondhand games to go higher, because of the loss of money from the game stores, eh? So here's some words to the industry, I'm not complaining, just stop making the games so worthless that someone would play it to death, get the Achievement and Trophies and then willingly get ripped off in trading it, then PERHAPS I would find less cheap copies. I exchange money for the games in a completely legal fashion, I have the RIGHT to play them without being labeled as 'an inconvenience'. I'm not stopping anytime soon.

Who's with me?

dangert125217d ago

and i am not paying so much for these games which require you buying dlc to be able to play the full game in effect the only games that don't do it are the ps3/360 exclusives 3rd party games are taking the pissnow

Lilith_Belial5213d ago

if 3rd party studios will cease to exist because of this, most likely not, since allot of people are to blind to see it for themselves, thankfully 1st party developers are here to stay, for now.

happy_gilmore5213d ago

no way you would play an old game unless it's really good and the console for it is still working.

i don't buy second-hand games but i trade my games as soon as i'm done with them. maybe i should consider renting games instead, but renting can also be as expensive if you don't get to play too many games.

Cajun Chicken5213d ago

Since the writing of this, I have bought a secondhand copy of BlastWorks for Wii for £8.

ian725212d ago

I buy new and secondhand games. If I really like and want a game straight away as its released then I look around and get it as cheap as possible. Sometimes by looking around I can save £10 or more on day 1 of release, sometimes only £1 or so. If I like the game but can wait then I'll get it secondhand or sometimes brand new very cheap. A few supermarkets drop prices only a few weeks after release and these can sometimes be cheaper than secondhand at game shops.
I don't trade in my games anymore as its not worth it most of the time. I do have around 70 blu-ray games and some PC ones. Its nice to go back to some older games and play them again.

Cajun Chicken5212d ago

Oh, don't get me wrong. Not ALL of my collection is secondhand, but a majority is. Sometimes, all it takes is a few weeks after release and I can get a game about £10 cheaper.

I have bought R&C:ToD, Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Infamous, Killzone 2, Resistance, Resistance 2, Prototype, Saints Row 2, Red Faction Guerrilla, LBP, Burnout Paradise for the PS3 all brand new (I don't think to date, I've actually bought a 360 game brand new, I've bought Madworld for Wii), but look around at prices at places like Amazon, Play.com, Zavvi or ShopTo.net, as like you said, you can get a copy about £15 cheaper than directly from a shop or take up crazy online offers such as PoP (2008) for £15 4 months down the line after release.

To cap it all, my copy of Infamous was the special edition with the cardboard box, little artbook and (now free) Blade power, I actually got this cheaper than a normal edition from say, Game, Gamestation or HMV.

But I have to admit, there's a great feeling when you pick up a cheap pre-owned game and find it brilliant and just keep it, it's kind of like picking up a toy at a carboot sale when you were a kid, the fact you beat the system and saved money in a completely legal manner. I'm just really annoyed that the game industry is determined to stamp it out and is saying I'm doing wrong by basically, not being to afford all the games I want at release.

The only game I have bought and traded in the last 5 years was Eat Lead for PS3, (I still want a copy back in my collection as I really enjoyed it, despite reviews) but that was to get money in exchange for Madworld.

earbus5212d ago

Have you guys heard that sony are going to lock multiplayer games 2nd hand and charge 20 bux to unlock it they do this with a code when the game is new you unlock it when you buy second hand woo no code damm.Bad company 2 is doing this i really only buy 2nd ps3 games play more pc and 360 this means ill buy even less games for ps3,untill they are bargin bin.

Cajun Chicken5212d ago

Yeah, that's what brought this on in the first place. Also, I've got fed up of being accused by top people in the game industry suddenly realising that they could make MORE MONEY by trying to eliminate the secondhand game.
I'm not happy with Sony's move at all.

evilmonkey5015205d ago

My parents are divorced and I live with both of them.I have a ps3 at both of my parents houses. Can I play on both systems?

Since Sony didn't publish bf2, would they have a right to charge for access to it, considering its already a licensed product?

i wonder if where gonna be able to jump

EternalTitan31m ago

Well its not an action game.
Even Elden Ring added jumping as an evolution of the combat system since Dark Souls did not feature jumping.
I want jumping as much as the next action game fan but this isnt that type of game.

-Foxtrot13h ago

I love the game so far but please don’t make the final part a mini game fest

Everytime I get to a new part in Rebirth it’s “mini game time”

Inverno7h ago

Hope ya don't mind me asking since it seems like you've played it, did it feel like a decent step up from the last game or was it more like the best from the last but more polished?

CS77h ago

It makes Remake feel like a demo.

9.5/10 imo. And I think the “mini games” did a great job of adding variety to the gameplay. Purely optional as well.

-Foxtrot6h ago

Here's my thoughts

I think it's a big step up from the first instalment, I'm enjoying it way more.

I thought keeping it just in Midgar was silly, it felt dragged out and it didn't have much variation in terms of the scenery.

However with Rebirth, as soon as you get out of Kalm you have a big world to explore and it's great to just wander round and explore.

Now that I'm half way in though, despite still liking what I'm playing, the gameplay loop is now starting to slow down on me. I've got to a new region and I'm like "Yaaay...need to go and find those towers again, oh look another special beast marker, is that a bird I see in the distance? Better follow it to another Mako Crystal"

It's like....you know how Peter Jackson was only supposed to have two Hobbit films then Warner Bros wanted a third film so he stretched the second film out as much as he could so he could keep stuff for the third film making a trilogy? Yeah it feels like that, so these mini games are a part of that overall gameplay loop to keep us going and stretch the game out overall so they have something for the third and final game.

I personally think you could have had the first instalment get you out of Midgar and through to Grasslands / Junon and the second game finishes things off.

Becuzisaid7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I had a weird cycle of love/hate for all the mini games as I played through. At first I really hated the seeming need to check all these boxes while exploring the grasslands. I didn't enjoy the Gilgamesh quest initially, and thought Queen's blood was fine but didn't want to commit to it. The side quests didn't really grab me either.

Then for some reason everything in Junon region changed my mind and I did pretty much everything. I liked most of the side quests, I actually liked playing fort condor (didn't care for it in the intergrade dlc). And my interest for completing these quests stayed pretty much through to Cosmo Canyon.

Then they added that horrible Lifestream memory/battle mini game and I started getting so burnt out of it all. I just wanted to do the story. I didn't do any side quests in neibleheim and beyond except for the summon. I abandoned Gilgamesh.

So what I'm saying is I would like the third part to go back to the focused progression from remake. Keep the mini games to the gold saucer. Start the game snowboarding if you want, but from there keep the story rolling.

-Foxtrot6h ago

That's funny you say that because I did everything in the Grasslands but once in Junon I started to slow down a little until Corel where by the end I was burnt out. I'm still currently going but I'm just doing what I can while things keep getting thrown at me.

I would have preferred half of these mini game side fillers / collectibles for some really beefy side quests that really adds onto the world of FFVII.

Inverno5h ago

Sounds like they hadn't really figured out what they wanted to do with Remake and this one is more of what they thought of doing which is probably why they're dragging it out to make a trilogy. Disappointed to hear it has towers cause man do i hate towers lol. It's been a while since I've played the first and it'll be a while longer to play the sequel, but it sounds like I'll enjoy it. 7 really impressed me especially after being disappointed with 15, felt like Square finally realized that FF was THEIR big franchise again.

Tacoboto3h ago

How many hours are you into it at this point?

My friend got like 20-30 in and pretty much quit because of its mini game era. He loved and basically binged through Gran Blue compared to Rebirth

As long as it comes out on PS5 to have the entire series on one platform, do whatever you want

franwex5h ago

The combat is my favorite thing about Rebirth. Would be really cool if they can improve it even more.

Knightofelemia5h ago

I hope after FF7 Square will either give a new FF game the remake treatment. Or give some of their older titles a remake treatment like Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, even Xenogears.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2's Scope Was Impacted by Xbox Series S Limitations

Wccf tech writes: "Kingdom Come Deliverance 2's scope was impacted by the Xbox Series S hardware limitations, as developers could only make a game that was 25% bigger than its predecessor."

This is the issue with things like this

Xbox Series X is apparently to MS the worlds most powerful console

However the Series S is obviously a limitation because it’s underpowered and developers have to go for parity.

So what’s the point of the world’s most powerful console if you are holding third party developers back? They aren’t going to push themselves if they have to think about the weakest console.

The issue wouldn’t be as bad if it was just Xbox but you are also affecting the PS version aswell

I think developers need to start just taking advantage of a console and if one of them can’t do X Y and Z then f*** them…why should the others suffer. What’s MS going to do? The bigger the franchise the least chance MS are going to tell them to f*** off. Baulders Gate 3 seemed to have stood their ground and suddenly their “strict” parity rule didn’t really matter. We suddenly got super optimisation efforts for the Series S that got things sorted.

anast9h ago

I agree, and the sad part is use normal folk saw it the second they announced their plans.

Abear215h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Agree 100% this is why I didn’t want the M$ Monopoly, now PS5 version will be held back too.

If PS5 Pro comes out and Series S is still a thing it’ll be interesting what differences and what devs choose to do. Really hoping Rockstar pushes the PS5 pro with GTA6 and we get the best version possible.

outsider16243h ago

Good ole S indeed. Everyone knew this all along. S was holding games back...Now where the hell is Orchard i want a word with him.

MajorLazer21m ago

I ****ing hate the S. The tragic thing is withour the S MS doesn't even threaten 10m units sold this gen 🤣

LucasRuinedChildhood14h ago

More info from the author of the article, I think: https://www.reddit.com/r/ki...

Quote:
"1) I was told this info from the producer of the game Martin Klíma.
2) He specifically said the game will have only one mode.
3) And this mode is 4K 30 on PS5/XSX and 1440p 30 on XSS.
4) He said that the game is already running north of the 30 FPS cap so the performance should be stable on launch, much better than KCD1.
5) The limitation was XSS because of the 10GB memory. He said that's why they wanted to make the game 25% larger.
6) Speculation on my part: the output resolution is probably upscaled and the reason why there won't be a 60 FPS mode is because it'll most likely be very CPU heavy, like Dragon's Dogma 2 for example."

Doesn't seem like they're adding a 40fps mode on PS5/Series X for launch even if they can handle it.

Sgt_Slaughter9h ago

I'd much rather have 1440p/60fps or even 45fps. Having just one, even with the Series S in mind, is disappointing.

franwex8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Remember when xbots were adamant that the series s won’t hold back the gen?

Microsoft just needs to let go of the mandatory parity. Who cares if your grandma doesn’t understand that a game cannot be played on the S. It’s not like it she can buy you a physical game for it anyway. Before buying the game put up a notice that it only works on series X. If you’re buying for a friend-allow for a refund.

Bam. Everyone is happy. Most series s owners are for casuals that want Game Pass anyway and most likely don’t purchase most games.

If the developers want it to run on S, let them figure it out.

Chocoburger2h ago

If it were Series X only then they'd only be selling to 25% of the Xbox Series userbase, and that's certainly not worth the time and effort into doing a port. Could just do PS5 & PC instead. No compromises needed.

Jin_Sakai8h ago

“During the event, the Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 producer also revealed that on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the game will run at 4K resolution and 30 frames per second“

Another “creative decision” right? 🤦‍♂️

IHateNate7h ago

Amateur hour. Very incapable developer.

Outside_ofthe_Box7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Since you're not an amateur and clearly know more than them, can you over there and help get the game running on the S without having to sacrifice their true vision. Us gamers would really appreciate you using your wisdom for good 🙏

IHateNate7h ago

Thousands of games run just fine on S.

But Kingdom Come is the game that can’t. Must be one hell of a game!

franwex5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Thousands of games run on PS4 and on Switch. If developers want them to run on those systems. Fine. Those two platforms still get new games. Sony isn’t making studios also make a ps4 pro version, or Nintendo a wiiu version. Microsoft technically is.

IHateNate4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

If games like Alan Wake 2, GTA6, COD, hellblade all run on S, no excuse for this 100x smaller and 100x worse looking game to be held back.

outsider16243h ago(Edited 3h ago)

"Thousands of games run just fine on S.

But Kingdom Come is the game that can’t. Must be one hell of a game!"

Kingdom come 2 runs just fine alright. Its the SCOPE that they want. They had to cut it because of the stupid S series. Hellblade2 ran just fine too..but im pretty confident if it was just the X in mind, the scope of the game would have been much bigger.

IHateNate3h ago

So their scope is greater than that of GTA6 and warzone? Wow. Crazy
